Behavior Examples 

 

Track I is designed to effectively manage mild to moderate behavior issues at the classroom level initially, with progression to an Office referral if needed. Below is a sample list of behaviors that qualify as Track I behaviors.

Scholar is Distracted/ Off Track/ Not Working

 

Scholar is Talking/ Interrupting Others

 

Scholar Refuses to Follow Directions

 

Scholar is using Unkind Words

 

Scholar is Screaming/ Calling Out

 

Scholar is touching others in Non-Violent Manner (Tickling, Nudging, Tapping, Bumping, Poking)

Scholar is Engaged in Horseplay that causes harm to self or others

 

Swearing (First Offense)

 

Disrespect of Property

 

Spitting

 

Step 1: Verbal Warning
 

Upon recognizing an issue, the teacher should issue a verbal warning.  Verbal warnings should not be delivered across the classroom. The teacher should move in close to the scholar and let the scholar know what she or he is expected to do. The scholar should then be asked to identify the next step.

Step 2: Incorporation of Clip Up/ Clip Down system
 

 

Each scholar is provided a clip and will start out each day the GREEN level of the Clip Up/Down chart.  Throughout the day, the scholar will move his/her clip up or down the color chart depending on his/her behavior throughout the day.  At the end of the day, each scholar's behavior should be recorded on the clip sheet and sent home to parents.

 

Below are a list of the colors in the Clip Up/Down and what they represent for scholars.

  • Perfect PINK: My behavior was perfect.  I went above and beyond to follow rules and work hard.

 

  • Good as GOLD:  My behavior was great!  I worked hard and followed our rules!

 

  • Brilliant BLUE: My behavior is brilliant! I am making smart choice to help my brain grow!

 

  • GREEN: My behavior is good.  I am working hard and following rules.  I am treating others kindly.

 

  • YELLOW Think about it: I am in charge of my behavior, and I need to make a change.

 

  • ORANGE Cool Down! :  I need to take a break and think about my behavior.  I need to make a change.  (This may be a good place to utilize Tab In/Out).

 

  • RED Trip to the Office and Parent Contact—I am not being a successful part of our class.  I will come back when I can follow directions.

Step 3: Incorporation of Tab In/ Tab Out system

 

TAB IN is a desk IN your room where a scholar is still able to be involved in the lesson.  The desk should face toward the group and scholars should continue with the lesson at the TAB IN desk.

 

TAB OUT is when a scholar is sent to a buddy room to fill out a think sheet and calm down, they are removed so learning may continue and can return after sheet is filled out and scholar is demonstraing they are ready to learn.

 

TAB IN/TAB OUT is appropriate for scholars who are exhibiting non-disruptive behaviors.  It is designed to give a scholar a break to reflect upon poor choices, to regain composure and to return to being an effective member of the classroom.

Step 4: Office Referral

 

  • First Office Referral: 

    • 1-Hour time out of classroom (In-School Suspension (ISS) room)

    • 3-Day Lunch/Recess

    • Parents Called

 

  • Second Office Referral:

    • 1-Day In-School Suspension (If the incident occurs before 12:00 p.m., ISS will be the remainder of that day; if the incident occurs at 12:00 p.m. or later, ISS will be the remainder of that day and the following day).

    • Parents Called

    • Parents Asked to Come In and Observe Scholar Behavior (Upon Return to Classroom)

 

  • Third Office Referral:

    • 2-Day In-School Suspension

    • Parents Called

    • Referred to Response to Intervention (RTI) Team (The RTI Team is a group of Teachers, Administrators and support staff who meet to discuss behavioral and academic interventions to support scholars.)

 

  • Fourth Office Referral:

    • 3-Day In-School Suspension

    • Parents Called

    • Referral to Gallahue Services (Gallahue Services is a school-based counseling service that provides individual and group therapy as well as classroom support when needed.)

 

  • Fifth Office Referral:

    • 5-Day Out-of-School Suspension

    • And/OR Referral to Reach for Youth (Reach for Youth is a program designed to provide behavioral counseling and interventions as an alternative to expulsion from school.)
